The Importance of Observing the World Humanitarian Day Every August 19th

Every year on August 19th, the world pauses to observe World Humanitarian Day - a day dedicated to honoring those who dedicate their time, resources and expertise to alleviating suffering, protecting vulnerable populations, and promoting peace. This observance not only celebrates the extraordinary efforts of humanitarian workers but also underscores the ongoing importance of humanitarian principles in fostering a more compassionate and just global society.

In this light, the Association for Training and Rural Development (ATRUD), will observe the Day this year in honor of all volunteers, partners, sponsors, donors and well-wishers who have stood with ATRUD since it was formed in 2018.

A Brief History of World Humanitarian Day

The origins of World Humanitarian Day trace back to a tragic event that galvanized global awareness and action. On August 19, 2003, 22 humanitarian aid workers were killed in a bomb attack in Baghdad, Iraq. One of them Vieira de Mello, a highly respected UN diplomat, was popularly known for mediating conflicts and advocating for human rights. His death along with others, symbolized the perilous nature of humanitarian work and the risks aid workers face in conflict zones.

In recognition of this tragedy and to honor the resilience and dedication of humanitarian workers worldwide, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated August 19th as World Humanitarian Day in 2009. The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the Baghdad attack. Since then, the day has evolved into an annual occasion to highlight the critical role of humanitarian efforts and to remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

ATRUD was born at a time when armed conflict had just broken out in two regions of Cameroon. Many people were losing their lives and properties, while others were displaced and left living in terrible conditions in the wild. Many humanitarian organizations like ATRUD mobilized resources and since then, have been assisting internally displaced persons from the conflict till date.

ATRUD has carried out several humanitarian projects thanks to support from donors, sponsors, partners and a dynamic team of volunteers. On this special day for Humanitarians, team ATRUD would like to express profound appreciation to all who have been supportive in any way.

On August 19th 2025, we would like to do the following:

  1. Honor our humanitarian workers.
  2. Raise more awareness on the need to support humanitarian projects.
  3. Promote solidarity and compassion.
  4. Advocate for protection and safety.
  5. Reaffirm our commitment to the humanitarian values - humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence, enshrined in the Geneva Conventions.

We invite you to support our humanitarian efforts in any way you like. You can donate cash, materials or your expertise. ATRUD welcomes all kinds of support.

Happy World Humanitarian Day 2025.
